Batlow Cider have a couple of tasty little ciders out at the moment. So recently, at the Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular, I made a beeline over to the Batlow stand. Out of tap number 3 with a new cider. The Batlow OPA, for those of you playing along at home, it’s not just a terrible play on the IPA, the juggernaut sweeping across craft beer world. In fact, it stands for Oaked Pear & Apple. The guys gave a midi of the OPA. “Worthy of closer inspection”, I said.
If you’re an Australian interested in food, even in the slightest bit, you will know the name Maggie Beer. More than a celebrity cook, Maggie Beer is a champion of the produce of the Barossa Valley. Now she has added a cider to her pantry of gourmet goodies. When I saw it on the shelf I asked myself “Is this made by Beer, or is her brand jumping on the band wagon?”
Down in Harcourt, Victoria its the middle of the 2015 Vintage. Fruit picking is in full swing. It’s beginning to look like a bumper crop. I called Simon Frost between truckloads of apples bins coming out of the orchard ready to be pressed and turned into Harcourt Apple Cider waiting for me to review.
I’m pretty excited about this cider review. Not only is New England Cider Company one of the newest names in the Australian Cider industry they are also from my region of New South Wales. This makes their first cider, the Ice Breaker, as far as I can tell, the most northern cider in Australia.
Endless Cider, without a doubt is the stripiest cider I’ve reviewed so far. Inspired by a trip to the UK, The Endless Apple Cider takes apples from Gippsland and turns them into a cider designed to convert people into cider fans. What a great idea, but did they pull it off?
Apple Thief set themselves apart in the market by making ciders from single varieties of apples. The clue is in the name, Apple Thief Granny Smith Cider. David Purcell the owner and cider maker, grew up in the apple orchards of Batlow, New South Wales. He’s set himself a challenge making ciders without blending varieties instead it’s made exclusively from Granny Smiths.
