I’ve left London on a west bound train. I’ve got my bike loaded up with 10 kilos worth of cloths and cameras. I’ve got 70 odd kilometers ride a head of me today. This is my first time into Somerset, I’m trying to get a good sense of what makes Somerset cider unique. This is my UK Cider Tour Day 1.
There was old yarn about the pioneers pushing west. Their efforts were foiled by a dog sitting on their tuckerbox spoiling the food supplies. Borambola Wines also had dog who stood guard who met an untimely end and have chosen to name their cider, Tuckerbox Apple Cider, after this Jack Russel Terrior box. Borambola Wines are based between Gundagai and Wagga Wagga in the central southern region of New South Wales. The company started as a winery and while they do grow the grapes locally, the apples are sourced from Orange. And hey, we know Orange grows great apples so we are off to a good start.
Cheeky Grog Co are one of those great companies that never take themselves too seriously. But now they have a new apple in the orchard to play with. The Kingston Heritage is the latest cider to be released onto the Australian market, made exclusively with the Kingston Black apple.

This is Willie Smith’s Whisky Aged Cider. I often talk about a sense of place with a cider. Apples reflect the soil they’re rooted in. Vintages reflect the season. Wild yeasts native to a cider house sneak in with a signature flourish. A simple glass of cider can be a lesson in everything from meteorology to geography and even history.
Cider made from traditional cider apples is pretty rare. An Aussie perry from perry pears is a about as rare as a full set of teeth at a ice hockey match. Herny’s of Harcourt have pulled out a perry made from real perry pears and called it the “Gylden Paere”.
